"USC Welcomes the Return of 'Professor' Pete Carroll for the New School Year"
Experienced former coach of the Southern California and Seattle Seahawks teams, Pete Carroll, is returning to his alma mater.
In an interview with Seattle's Sports Radio 93.3 KJR-FM on Tuesday, Carroll revealed that he will be teaching a course at USC this upcoming spring.
"I'm eagerly anticipating this opportunity," he stated. "It's going to be a thrilling endeavor once everything is finalized."
This was Carroll's first appearance in the Seattle media since his farewell press conference with the Seahawks in January.
He did not disclose any details about the subject matter of his class.
"People are curious about my plans, whether I'll be coaching or not. I'm collaborating with some fantastic individuals and exploring exciting opportunities to create something special for others. I'll continue to work in this way and see where it takes me," he explained.
Under Carroll's leadership, the Seahawks had a record of 137-89-1, including a Super Bowl XLVIII victory, before he was replaced by Mike Macdonald. However, in 2023, the team finished with a 9-8 record and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years.
"I haven't had any contact with them," Carroll said about his current relationship with the Seahawks. "I ran into Mike in the parking lot one day, and it was a great opportunity for us to meet and catch up. Other than that, I haven't had much involvement with them. I'll occasionally watch their games on TV."
Carroll previously coached USC from 2001-2009, leading them to an undefeated national championship season in 2004. Before that, he was the head coach for the New York Jets (1994) and New England Patriots (1997-1999).
At 73 years old, Carroll has not ruled out the possibility of returning to coaching.
"I get asked about it a lot, and I have a pretty standard response now," he shared. "Physically, I'm in the best shape I've been in for a long time. I'm ready to take on all the activities I'm currently involved in and feeling great about it. I could start coaching tomorrow, but it's not something I'm actively seeking at this point. It's not the coaching season. We'll see what happens."
"I'm not waiting around for it. I have other things I want to do that I'm excited about, and I'll see how it all plays out. If this is the end of my 48-year coaching career, I'll be content with that," he concluded.
