Los Angeles Angels vs. New York Yankees Pick & Prediction AUGUST 7th 2024
Preview and Prediction
This past Sunday, Aaron Judge had three opportunities at the plate where he did not face a single pitch from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Following his first career experience of being intentionally walked three times, Judge and his New York Yankees will discover on Wednesday if the Los Angeles Angels will treat him in the same manner.
Due to a rainout on Tuesday, the teams will play their second doubleheader of the season with the Yankees entering the game with seven wins in their last eight games after a rough stretch of 10 wins in 23 games.
Judge, who currently leads the league with 41 home runs, hit two of those homers in the first two games of the series against Toronto before being intentionally walked three times on Sunday. Despite his impressive performance at the plate, Judge has also drawn 12 walks in his last nine games, including four intentional walks in the last two games.
Juan Soto, who homered on Sunday and has been hitting .386 in his last 20 games, expressed his frustration with teams choosing to pass over Judge. He stated, "I want them to challenge him and see what he can really do. It is what it is, it's part of the game. They're trying to win, too, so you respect that."
The Angels will enter their first doubleheader of the season with 12 wins in their last 21 games, with 10 of those wins being decided by three runs or less. In their last two games against the New York Mets, the Angels have won by one run.
On Saturday, Zach Neto hit a go-ahead three-run homer in a 5-4 win, and on Sunday, the Angels overcame three errors to secure a 3-2 victory. The Angels' bullpen, consisting of Jose Marte, Mike Baumann, and Roansy Contreras, held the Mets scoreless for four innings, while Matt Thaiss and Kevin Pillar had sacrifice flies to contribute to the win.
Manager Ron Washington praised his relievers, saying, "They did a tremendous job. Before the game, I stopped all three and asked them if they were ready to finish the game. But it worked out."
The Angels will have third baseman Anthony Rendon back in the lineup after being out with lower back tightness, while Taylor Ward will be on the paternity list. Infielder Luis Rengifo underwent season-ending surgery on his right wrist after last playing on Friday.
For the first game of the doubleheader, the Yankees will have Luis Gil (11-5, 3.20 ERA) on the mound. Gil has been in good form, with a 2-0 record and 2.76 ERA in his last three starts. However, he struggled in four starts from June 20 to July 7, going 0-4 with a 9.37 ERA. In his last start against the Angels on May 29, Gil allowed only one run and struck out nine batters in eight innings.
The Angels will counter with Davis Daniel (1-2, 4.91 ERA) in the first game. He has had two strong outings sandwiched between two losses. In his last start on July 31, he allowed one run in five innings against the Colorado Rockies.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Yankees will have Will Warren (0-0, 6.75 ERA) on the mound for his second career start. In his major league debut on July 30, Warren allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings after Gerrit Cole was scratched.
For the Angels, Carson Fulmer (0-2, 3.69 ERA) will start the second game. In his last start against the Rockies, he allowed two runs in six innings. Fulmer has only faced the Yankees once before, in a relief appearance for the Baltimore Orioles in 2020.
Los Angeles Angels vs. New York Yankees Recap AUG 7TH 2024
Tuesday's game between the visiting Los Angeles and New York Yankees was postponed due to a forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The teams will attempt to open their three-game series by playing a traditional doubleheader Wednesday afternoon beginning at 4:05 p.m.
The postponement was announced about three hours before the scheduled first pitch after a flood watch was issued earlier in the day for New York.
Pitching plans for the doubleheader were not yet known. New York rookie Luis Gil was slated to start the opener against Angels rookie Davis Daniel on Tuesday.
The Yankees have won seven of eight following a 10-23 slide from June 15-July 26. They took two of three at home from the Toronto Blue Jays when Aaron Judge hit MLB-best his 40th and 41st home runs in the first two games before being intentionally walked three times Sunday.
The Angels are 12-9 in their past 21 games and took two of three at home from the New York Mets this weekend.
