Breaking News: Boise State Names QB Maddux Madsen as Starter for Season Opener

Starting quarterback duties for Boise State's first game against Georgia Southern on Aug. 31 will go to Maddux Madsen, as reported by multiple sources.

The redshirt sophomore, who has appeared in 10 games over the past two years, was chosen over highly-touted transfer Malachi Nelson from USC.

Madsen saw action in nine games in 2023 and has a career total of 1,234 passing yards and nine touchdowns. He battled for the starting role last season with Taylen Green, ultimately earning the spot but suffering a torn MCL and PCL against New Mexico on Nov. 11 after throwing for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Green has since transferred to Arkansas.

Boise State is considered one of the top contenders from non-power conferences to secure a spot in the new 12-team playoff format in 2024. The Broncos, who finished with an 8-6 record and 6-2 in conference play in 2023, are the reigning Mountain West champions.

Leading the Broncos' offense once again will be running back Ashton Jeanty. He led all of college football with an average of 159.7 yards per game last season, racking up a total of 1,916 all-purpose yards, including 1,347 rushing yards, and was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year.
