"Red Sox to Face Astros' Right-Hander Justin Verlander on Wednesday After Neck Injury Recovery"
Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander will make his return from the injured list on Wednesday to start against the Boston Red Sox, according to confirmation from manager Joe Espada on Monday.
Verlander has been out of action since June 9 due to neck discomfort. The former MVP and three-time Cy Young Award winner recently completed two rehab starts with Double-A Corpus Christi, with his last outing on Thursday resulting in two runs (one earned) on four hits over four innings. He also recorded five strikeouts without issuing a walk.
The 41-year-old has a record of 3-2 and an ERA of 3.95 in 10 starts this season, which has been plagued by injuries. He began the year on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation, which kept him out until April 19.
Throughout his 19-year career in the major leagues, Verlander has accumulated a record of 260-143 and an ERA of 3.25 while playing for the Detroit Tigers (2005-2017), New York Mets (2023), and Astros (2017-2022, 2023-2024).
He rejoins a Houston team that is competing for their fourth consecutive American League West title and their seventh in the last eight years. As of Monday, the Astros are four games ahead of the second-place Seattle Mariners.
In his career, Verlander has a record of 6-6 and an ERA of 2.74 in 20 regular-season starts against the Red Sox. His last encounter with Boston was on August 22, 2023, when he struck out nine batters over six scoreless innings in a 7-3 victory for the Astros.
