"Ketel Marte, Diamondbacks' Infielder, Placed on 10-Day Injured List for Ankle Injury"
The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed their second baseman, Ketel Marte, on the 10-day injured list due to re-aggravating an ankle injury. This announcement was made by the team on Monday.
Marte initially sprained his left ankle on August 10th during a game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Unfortunately, he further aggravated the injury in his first at-bat during the following game against the Colorado Rockies on Monday, resulting in a 5-4 win for the Diamondbacks.
On Tuesday, Marte underwent a precautionary MRI and manager Torey Lovullo described it as a "low-grade ankle sprain" that would be monitored on a day-to-day basis.
After sitting out for a few games, Marte returned to the field on Saturday as the designated hitter in a 6-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. However, he was not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game and only came on as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. Unfortunately, he had to be helped off the field after going to the ground while checking his swing.
According to Lovullo, "It didn't look great. He creates a lot of force when he pushes off the ground. A very strong man. It just got him."
Marte has had a successful season so far, hitting .298 with 30 home runs and 81 RBIs in 116 games.
In response to Marte's injury, the Diamondbacks have recalled infielder Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Smith, who is 28 years old, has a batting average of .270 (17-for-63) with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 29 games this season. In his five seasons with the Diamondbacks, he has a batting average of .242 with 31 home runs and 132 RBIs in 330 games.
Smith was previously sent down to Triple-A when first baseman Josh Bell was activated on August 2nd.
Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks lost to the Rays on Sunday in a 12-inning game with a final score of 8-7. They will now begin a three-game road series against the Miami Marlins on Monday night.
