'Jason Heyward, Padres' Outfielder, Placed on Injured List; Tirso Ornelas, Rookie, Called Up'
The San Diego Padres put experienced outfielder Jason Heyward on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday due to inflammation in his left knee and called up outfielder Tirso Ornelas from Triple-A El Paso.
The 35-year-old Heyward, who has a batting average of .190 with one home run and six RBIs in 17 games this year, joins center fielders Jackson Merrill (right hamstring strain) and Brandon Lockridge (left hamstring strain) on the disabled list. Heyward played in 11 consecutive games before having to sit out on Friday night to address his knee issues.
The 25-year-old Ornelas signed for a $1.5 million bonus in 2017, but has yet to make his major league debut with the Padres. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound left-handed hitter has hit 28 home runs and has a .291/.367/.462 slash line in 203 games over four seasons with El Paso.
Ornelas has recorded a .281 average with one home run and seven RBIs in 17 games in Triple-A this season.
