'Braves and INF Gio Urshela Reach Contract Agreement'
The Braves and infielder Gio Urshela struck a deal on Tuesday, as Atlanta inked him to a contract to take the place of injured third baseman Austin Riley.
Riley was put on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, with the move being retroactive to Monday. He is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks due to a fractured right hand.
In order to make space for Urshela on the 40-man roster, the Braves transferred left-hander A.J. Minter to the 60-day injured list.
Urshela, 32, was released by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday after batting .243 with five home runs and 37 RBIs in his first season with the team.
Throughout his career, Urshela has maintained a .273 batting average and .730 OPS with Cleveland (2015, 2017), the Toronto Blue Jays (2018), New York Yankees (2019-21), Minnesota Twins (2022), Los Angeles Angels (2023) and Tigers.
The Braves currently trail the Philadelphia Phillies by seven games in the National League East and hold the third NL wild-card spot, with a 1.5 game lead over the New York Mets.
On Tuesday, the Braves and Phillies will kick off a crucial three-game series at home.
