Blue Jays and two-time All-Star closer Jordan Romano mutually agree to end partnership
The Toronto Blue Jays declined to offer a contract to two-time All-Star closer Jordan Romano on Friday, making the right-hander a free agent.
Romano, 31, first made it to the big leagues in 2019 with the Blue Jays and has recorded 105 saves in 231 career games. He has a record of 20-17 and a 1.14 WHIP.
Romano faced injuries last season and had a record of 1-2 with eight saves and a 6.59 ERA in 14 games. He underwent surgery on his right elbow in July, ending his season.
In both 2022 and 2023, Romano had 36 saves and was selected for the American League All-Star team.
The Canadian-born pitcher earned $7.75 million on a one-year contract last season.
The Blue Jays also reached a one-year agreement with Erik Swanson and declined to offer a contract to fellow right-hander Dillon Tate.
Swanson, 31, agreed to a $3 million deal. He went 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 45 relief appearances last season, his second with the Blue Jays.
Tate, 30, had no decisions and a 5.40 ERA in four relief appearances for Toronto in 2024. He also made 29 appearances for the Baltimore Orioles and went 2-1 with a 4.59 ERA.
