Preview and Prediction

The Milwaukee Brewers are counting on experienced southpaw Jose Quintana to replicate his impressive first performance when they face the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.

Quintana (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will take the mound for the decisive game of the three-game series. He will go up against right-hander Keider Montero (6-6, 4.76 ERA in 2024), who will be making his season debut for Detroit.

In Tuesday's game, the Brewers bounced back with a 5-0 win after losing the first game of the series. Quinn Priester and four relievers combined to allow only one hit. Priester, who was acquired from the Boston Red Sox this month, pitched five hitless innings before giving up a leadoff double in the sixth. The bullpen then retired 12 consecutive batters.

This victory also prevented the Brewers from suffering their second four-game losing streak of the season. Last year, they were the only team in the majors to avoid a losing streak of four or more games.

Quintana, who was signed as a free agent in early March, began the season in the minor leagues. In his first start for Milwaukee last Friday, he threw seven shutout innings and allowed only four hits in a 7-0 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He threw 80 pitches in that outing.

In his career, Quintana has a record of 6-6 with a 4.85 ERA in 23 games (22 starts) against the Tigers. He last faced them in 2022 when he was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

On Tuesday, Rhys Hoskins hit his first home run of the season and two singles, raising his batting average from .182. Christian Yelich, who was given a day off on Monday after a slow start to the season, snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a single in the seventh inning.

Brice Turang has been a consistent performer for the Brewers, hitting safely in 17 of 18 games and leading the team with 24 hits.

Due to injuries to their pitching staff, the Brewers made a roster move before Tuesday's game by recalling right-hander Logan Henderson from Triple-A Nashville. Right-hander Elvin Rodriguez, who pitched five innings in relief on Monday, was sent down.

Henderson had a record of 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA in three starts for Nashville.

According to Brewers manager Pat Murphy, "He's been throwing the ball really well. That's why he's here. We need help. All hands on deck. Whether or not he stays for an extended period of time will depend on his performance and the health of other players."

The Tigers, who have won their last four series after being swept in the first series of the season, will need a win on Wednesday to continue their streak.

Montero will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start the game. Reliever Brenan Hanifee, who allowed two unearned runs on three hits on Tuesday, will be sent down to Toledo.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said, "It's all about the rotation and giving multiple guys a benefit from it. We've been able to go this entire way so far without any of our starters being on that traditional five-day start, and we have a chance to continue it with arguably a guy who could've been on our team from the get-go."

Montero has a record of 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA in two starts for Toledo this season.

The scheduled starter for Wednesday, Reese Olson, has been pushed back to Thursday.

Detroit Tigers vs. Milwaukee Brewers Recap APR 16TH 2025

Jose Quintana threw 5 2/3 quality innings and Christian Yelich slugged one of three Milwaukee home runs as the Milwaukee Brewers posted a 5-1 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Wednesday afternoon.

Quintana (2-0) allowed one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking three. Rhys Hoskins had a two-run homer and Sal Frelick connected on his first home run of the season, as the Brewers took two of three from Detroit.

Detroit starter Keider Montero (0-1) gave up five earned runs on eight hits but struck out eight and walked just one. Spencer Torkelson's solo home run accounted for all of the Tigers' scoring. Javier Baez finished with a pair of hits for Detroit, which has dropped three of four games.

Quintana worked around three first-inning walks before Montero struck out three in the bottom of the first, despite allowing Yelich and William Contreras' singles.

Milwaukee struck first in the second as Garrett Mitchell hit a one-out triple and later scored on an Oliver Dunn sacrifice bunt.

The Brewers tacked on in the third, when Yelich launched his fourth homer of the year -- a 404-foot solo shot -- and Hoskins belted a two-run homer three batters later to extend the lead to 4-0.

Detroit cracked the scoreboard with Torkelson's solo homer in the sixth, his sixth of the season. After Quintana struck out Riley Greene, Baez reached on an error, and Abner Uribe replaced the Milwaukee starter after 100 pitches.

The Brewers got the run back in the home half of the sixth, as Frelick's first home run of the year gave Milwaukee a 5-1 edge. After Hoskins singled, Montero was relieved by Brant Hurter.

Trevor Megill pitched the ninth for the Brewers, allowing Dillon Dingler's one-out single, before Kerry Carpenter grounded into a game-ending double play.
