"Washington's Right Wing T.J. Oshie Anticipated to Be Placed on Extended Injured Reserve"
Washington Capitals right wing and alternate captain T.J. Oshie is expected to be placed on long-term injured reserve at the start of the season.
The announcement was made by the Capitals on Wednesday following Oshie's completion of his medical examination.
Last season, Oshie struggled with a recurring back injury, which was his ninth season with the Caps. Despite this, he managed to tally 37 points (12 goals, 25 assists) in 52 regular-season games.
This was just the latest in a series of injury-plagued seasons for the 37-year-old, who has only played in 154 of the team's 246 regular season games (62.6 percent) over the past three years.
In a statement released by the team on Wednesday, Oshie said, "The past season was a difficult one for me, my family, and my teammates. During the offseason, I have been focused on finding long-term solutions for my injury."
He added, "I am committed to this process and am doing my best to regain full health. In the meantime, I will continue to support my teammates and the organization in any way I can. I am grateful for the support of our fans during this time."
Since joining the Capitals in 2015, Oshie has been the team's second-highest scorer behind Alexander Ovechkin. He has recorded 385 points (192 goals, 193 assists) in 567 regular season games and 60 points (29 goals, 31 assists) in 76 playoff games. In the 2018 postseason, he contributed eight goals and 13 assists, helping the team win their first Stanley Cup title.
Oshie's eight-year, $46 million contract with the Capitals will expire next offseason, making him an unrestricted free agent.
For now, Capitals general manager Chris Patrick has stated that the team will provide support and assistance to Oshie as he seeks a solution for his recurring injury.
In a release, Patrick said, "T.J. is a crucial member of our team and an integral part of our organization and leadership group. We fully support him as he works through his current health challenges."
Throughout his 16-year career with the St. Louis Blues (2008-2015) and the Capitals, Oshie has accumulated 695 points (302 goals, 393 assists) in 1,010 regular season games and 69 points (34 goals, 35 assists) in 106 playoff games.
