Maple Leafs Forward Auston Matthews Suffers Upper-Body Injury

Toronto Maple Leafs Forward Auston Matthews Sidelined by Upper-Body Ailment | Picks n' Previews

The Toronto Maple Leafs' captain, Auston Matthews, will be absent from Thursday night's preseason match against the Montreal Canadiens due to an injury in his upper body.

This decision seems to be a precautionary measure, as head coach Craig Berube informed reporters that the injury is not severe and that his star center should recover quickly.

Matthews, who is 27 years old, left Tuesday's practice early and did not participate in Wednesday's session. According to TSN, he did take part in an optional skate on Thursday morning.

In the 2023-24 season, Matthews led the NHL in goals for the third time in four years, scoring a career-high of 69 goals and adding 38 assists in 81 games.

Since being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft by Toronto, Matthews has accumulated 649 points (368 goals, 281 assists) in 562 games.

The Maple Leafs have four more preseason games, including Thursday's match against the Canadiens, before they kick off their regular season against Montreal on October 9th.
