"Red Wings ink 7-year contract with D Moritz Seider"
The Detroit Red Wings inked a lucrative seven-year contract with star defenseman Moritz Seider on Thursday, worth nearly $60 million.
The yearly average value of the agreement is $8.55 million.
During the first day of training camp, the Red Wings hit the ice without their top-ranked defenseman, Seider. However, news quickly spread that the restricted free agent had reached a deal.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Red Wings had approximately $8.7 million remaining to work with, and they were able to fit Seider into that budget.
In an interview with the Free Press on Monday, general manager Steve Yzerman disclosed that a deal was in the works.
\"I\'m optimistic that we can come to an agreement soon - the sooner, the better for both sides,\" he stated. \"We\'re not too far apart, so hopefully we can make progress and get him here as soon as possible.\"
Seider, 23, was chosen as the sixth overall pick by the Red Wings in the 2019 NHL Draft. In his three seasons in the NHL, he has yet to miss a game.
The German native recorded a career-best nine goals and 33 assists last season. In his 246 career games, he has accumulated 134 points (21 goals, 113 assists).
Seider was awarded the Calder trophy for the 2021-22 season as the NHL\'s top rookie.
