The Edmonton Oilers' star captain, Connor McDavid, is anticipated to be out of action for two to three weeks due to an ankle injury, as announced by the team on Wednesday.

McDavid sustained the injury in the first shift of the Oilers' 6-1 defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.

The three-time recipient of the Hart Trophy was tripped by the stick of Blue Jackets' defenseman, Zach Werenski, and fell into the boards. Despite no penalty being called, McDavid did not return to the game.

After the game, Oilers' forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins expressed the team's concern, stating, "He's our leader and the best player in the game. So, of course, you're going to feel it."

McDavid flew back to Edmonton on Tuesday for further evaluation, as the team continues their four-game road trip. They will face the Nashville Predators on Thursday and the Calgary Flames on Sunday.

The 27-year-old McDavid has tallied 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 10 games this season, tying for the team lead.

Last season, he led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the Florida Panthers in Game 7. McDavid was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoff MVP.

With five Art Ross Trophies as the league's top point scorer, McDavid has accumulated 992 points (338 goals, 654 assists) in 655 career games since being selected first overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.
