"Devils Dominate Flyers with 4 Goals in 2nd Period"
Siblings Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes each earned a goal and an assist as the New Jersey Devils netted four goals in the second period and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night in Newark, N.J.
The Devils triumphed for the third time in four games and managed to win another game without their captain Nico Hischier, who is out with an upper-body injury. Hischier is expected to miss at least two more games.
Jack Hughes reached 20 goals for the fourth time in his career when he scored on a 2-on-1 with Jesper Bratt just 1:58 into the third period. Timo Meier, Brett Pesce and Bratt each contributed two assists for the Devils, who had previously lost both games against the Flyers this season.
Jake Allen made 24 saves for his third shutout of the season and 27th of his career. Allen's standout performance included a crucial save on Tyson Foerster's breakaway late in the first period and stopping Sean Couturier twice in the opening minutes.
Philadelphia's Samuel Ersson allowed four goals on 16 shots before being pulled following Mercer's goal. Ivan Fedotov replaced Ersson and made nine saves on 10 shots.
Penguins 3, Utah Hockey Clubs 2 (OT)
Sidney Crosby scored in overtime to secure a two-point game and lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a victory over Utah in Salt Lake City.
Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson also found the back of the net for the Penguins, who overcame two deficits and ended a three-game losing streak. Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves. Pittsburgh finished their seven-game road trip with a record of 3-4-0.
Mikhail Sergachev and Michael Carcone scored for Utah, who suffered their third consecutive loss (0-2-1). Goalie Connor Ingram made 25 saves.
Panthers 3, Kings 0
Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 29 shots for his 46th career shutout and second of the season as the Florida Panthers defeated the Los Angeles Kings in Sunrise, Fla.
Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and two assists while Sam Bennett and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers, who secured their fourth win in six games. This was the 899th career victory for Florida coach Paul Maurice, who is now only one win away from becoming the fourth NHL coach to reach 900 victories.
Darcy Kuemper made 36 saves for the Kings, who have lost seven of their last nine games (2-6-1) and have only scored 19 goals in their past 11 games.
Wild 3, Maple Leafs 1
Jared Spurgeon scored the game-winning goal in the first period and the Minnesota Wild went on to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Marat Khusnutdinov and Marcus Foligno (empty net) also contributed goals for the Wild, who have won the first two games of their five-game road trip after losing five of their previous six games. Filip Gustavsson made 32 saves for the Wild, earning his second straight win after losing four in a row. Minnesota swept the two-game season series against Toronto.
William Nylander scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost three games in a row and have only scored one goal in each of those games. Joseph Woll made 22 saves.
Canucks 3, Predators 1
Thatcher Demko made 31 saves and Linus Karlsson scored his first NHL goal as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Nashville Predators for their third consecutive win.
Nils Hoglander and Pius Suter also scored for the Canucks. Quinn Hughes, who recorded two assists, has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in his ongoing seven-game points streak.
Tommy Novak scored the Predators' only goal and Juuse Saros stopped 19 of 21 shots. Nashville has lost two straight games after a season-best five-game winning streak.
