Just four days after terminating their head coach, the New York Rangers revealed on Wednesday that president and general manager Chris Drury has reached an agreement for a multi-year contract extension.

The specific terms of the extension were not disclosed, but the 48-year-old Drury expressed his gratitude in a news release, stating that he is honored to continue his role with the team he grew up supporting in Connecticut.

\"As I mentioned when I first took on this position almost four years ago,\" Drury stated, \"there is no organization in hockey that is more special to me. I am excited to continue our efforts this offseason to help us achieve our goals for next season and beyond.\"

One of the main priorities for the Rangers is finding a replacement for Peter Laviolette, who was fired on Saturday along with associate head coach Phil Housley after the team finished with a record of 39-36-7 (85 points), falling just six points short of a playoff spot. The previous season, the Rangers had the best record in the league (55-23-4, 114 points) and made it to the Eastern Conference final before being eliminated by the Florida Panthers.

Laviolette was hired in 2023 to take over for Gerard Gallant, who, like Laviolette, only lasted two seasons with the Rangers.

Drury was promoted to team president and general manager in May 2021 after spending six seasons in the front office. Under his leadership, the Rangers have achieved a record of 193-105-30 in regular-season games and have made the playoffs three times, including two trips to the conference finals in 2022 and 2024. This four-year span marks the most wins for the franchise in its history.

In a statement released by James L. Dolan, MSG Sports Executive Chairman and CEO, he praised Drury's dedication and hard work, stating, \"Throughout his time with the Rangers, Chris has shown a deep passion for the organization, an unwavering work ethic, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. While we are disappointed with the outcome of this past season, I have full confidence in his ability to lead this team to success.\"

A former captain for the Rangers, Drury played 892 games over 12 seasons in the NHL with the Colorado Avalanche (1998-2003), Calgary Flames (2002-03), Buffalo Sabres (2003-07), and New York (2007-11).
