Alec Martinez, winner of three Stanley Cups, announces retirement

Experienced defenseman Alec Martinez, a three-time winner of the Stanley Cup, has announced his retirement.

During an interview on Saturday before Chicago's final home game against Winnipeg, Martinez declared that this would be his last NHL match. Although the Blackhawks will finish their season on the road, Martinez will not be joining them.

Chosen by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Draft, the Miami (Ohio) graduate made his NHL debut on October 3, 2009, and played in four games that season.

The 37-year-old became a regular player the following year and earned his first Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2011-12. He went on to win another in 2013-14, contributing 10 points during the playoff run.

In February 2020, Martinez was traded to Vegas and won his third Cup with the Golden Knights in 2022-23.

This was his only season with the Blackhawks, as he had been signed as a free agent.

Saturday marked Martinez's 862nd career game. As of Saturday, he had a total of 88 goals and 201 assists in his career, along with 1,883 blocked shots, 1,040 hits, and a plus-73 plus/minus rating.
