Rory McIlroy now shares top spot as favorite at PGA Championship
Now that Rory McIlroy's major championship drought of almost 11 years is over, it appears that anything is possible according to sportsbooks.
While Scottie Scheffler has been the presumed betting favorite to win any major in recent years, McIlroy's stock has risen to the point where he is now a co-favorite with Scheffler to win the upcoming PGA Championship.
At BetMGM, Scheffler opened as the +450 favorite to win the second major of the season, with McIlroy not far behind at +900. However, following McIlroy's historic victory at the Masters, he has now moved to co-favorite status with Scheffler at +500.
DraftKings also has both players listed at +500, while theScore Bet has McIlroy as the overall favorite at +450 and Scheffler at +475.
FanDuel Sportsbook has Scheffler as the +500 favorite and McIlroy at +550, but it is clear that the consensus is a two-man race.
McIlroy's recent Masters win, which made him the sixth golfer to complete the modern career Grand Slam, is only one factor in his favor.
The PGA Championship will take place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., where McIlroy has won the PGA Tour event (formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship) four times in his career.
In addition, McIlroy is in top form, having won three times this season, including against tough competition at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship.
On the other hand, Scheffler is not winning at the same pace as he did in 2024 (seven official tour events, plus the Olympics). He has three top-five finishes and has not placed lower than T25, but the World No. 1 has yet to secure a victory this season.
BetMGM has also reported that McIlroy is their biggest liability at the PGA Championship (May 15-18). The Northern Irishman has accumulated the highest percentage of the handle (23.2 percent) and total tickets (16.6 percent) of any golfer in the field.
