Report: PGA-LIV Vegas match to feature $10M crypto purse
According to a report from Front Office Sports, the PGA Tour-LIV Golf made-for-TV matchup on Dec. 17 will feature four of the sport's top players and a prize of at least $10 million in cryptocurrency.
The event, now called the Crypto.com Showdown, will see Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy from the PGA competing against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau from LIV in an 18-hole competition at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.
The sponsor has announced that the match will have "a multimillion-dollar purse to be paid in CRO cryptocurrency." It is currently unknown how much the winning and losing teams will receive.
This prize money is higher than most PGA Tour tournaments, except for major events which typically have a purse of $8-9 million. Winners of PGA events often take home over $1 million.
According to the FOS report, Crypto.com CMO Steve Kalifowitz stated that each player will need to register with Crypto.com in order to receive their winnings. He also mentioned that the players are not required to keep the cryptocurrency and can choose to sell or trade it.
The event, which will be broadcasted on TNT at 6 p.m. ET, will follow a Ryder Cup-style format with four-ball, singles, and alternate shot rounds.
In a similar event in 2018, Phil Mickelson took home the entire $9 million prize after defeating Tiger Woods in the first edition of "The Match." Earlier this year, McIlroy won $2.4 million after beating Max Homa, Rose Zhang, and Lexi Thompson.
