Inclement weather delays beginning of Wyndham Championship until Friday
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The opening round of the Wyndham Championship was postponed on Thursday due to hazardous conditions and heavy rainfall caused by Tropical Storm Debby.
The PGA Tour announced the schedule change later in the morning after previously delaying the start. The plan is for the 156-player field to begin the tournament on Friday at Sedgefield Country Club.
The PGA stated that the first round will not commence before 8:50 a.m. ET on Friday. The PGA Tour Rules Committee will determine updated starting times after evaluating the golf course on Friday morning.
There were multiple flash-flood warnings issued overnight, resulting in the closure of all facilities at the course. The rain did not let up and conditions worsened, with certain areas of the course being submerged.
Tour and tournament officials announced on Wednesday that spectators would not be permitted at the venue on Thursday due to safety concerns.
The Wyndham Championship serves as the final regular-season tournament on the PGA Tour schedule. Based on the results from the tournament, the final field of 70 golfers will be determined for the FedExCup playoffs, which begin next week.
