Corey Conners Excited for 'Incredible' Presidents Cup Vibe in Canada
The team of the International Presidents Cup enjoyed some team building by attending a preseason hockey game of the Montreal Canadiens, in one of the most Canadian ways possible.
Corey Conners, who had never been to Montreal's Bell Centre before, described it as "unbelievable" and filled with history and fans.
Conners is not a newcomer to the Presidents Cup, having made his debut in 2022 and played at Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2014 for the RBC Canadian Open.
What is new for Conners is the opportunity to be a key figure on the International team and to receive the support and hopes of the Canadian crowd.
"I think it's important to embrace the Canadian fans," Conners stated when asked about his expectations for the team. "We haven't experienced it yet, but I believe we should try to motivate the guys. I've been telling them about the amazing atmosphere and the large number of Canadian and international fans who will be there to cheer us on. It's going to be incredible to get started."
International captain Mike Weir, Canada's golf hero and sole men's major champion, chose Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, and Taylor Pendrith as three of his six captain's picks for the team. Conners, Hughes, and Pendrith all represent Canada and were teammates at Kent State University.
"We go way back. We're great friends," Conners said. "We've spent a lot of time together and know each other's games very well. It's amazing to be on the team with these guys. They are extremely talented players. It's pretty cool.
"I don't think any of us imagined being here when we were at Kent State or on the Canadian National Team."
Golf has been thriving in Canada, with Conners, Pendrith, Hughes, Nick Taylor, and Adam Svensson all winning on the PGA Tour in the last two years.
"It's really exciting to be a Canadian golfer right now," Pendrith shared. "Golf is incredibly popular in Canada. Canadians have been performing well on the PGA Tour. It seems like every time there's an event, there's a record number of Canadians in the field or on the team.
"It's just enjoyable to be a part of. These are great guys to be around. I believe we all push each other."
While acknowledging that he is representing "the shield," which serves as the International team's logo this week, Conners is aware that the crowd will be rooting for him for a more personal reason.
"I believe there is a distinction in this event between the fans who are cheering for you and those who are cheering against you," he explained. "Everyone is a golf fan, and it's exciting to come and watch.
"But I think I will embrace the people who will be supporting us, the International Team, the Canadians, and especially me. It will be fantastic."
