'Steelers P Cameron Johnston suffers 'severe injury' against Falcons'

Pittsburgh's punter, Cameron Johnston, suffered a significant injury to his right knee during the Steelers' 18-10 win against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Johnston, who will undergo an MRI on Monday to assess the extent of his injury, was injured in the fourth quarter when he was hit by a Falcons defender. A holding penalty on Pittsburgh resulted in a new fourth down, and kicker Chris Boswell stepped in to punt for Johnston, kicking a 43-yard punt.

At a postgame press conference, Tomlin stated, "Cam Johnston appears to have a serious injury. I'll have an update for you next time we come together. It's a shame for him. This guy has been outstanding during team development. He's not only talented, but also has a great work ethic. My heart goes out to him."

In the season opener, Johnston had two punts for 103 yards, averaging 51.5 yards per punt and placing one inside the 20.

Originally from Australia, the 32-year-old Johnston played 95 games for the Philadelphia Eagles (2018-20) and Houston Texans (2021-23) before signing a three-year, $9 million contract with the Steelers. He has punted 445 times with an average of 47.3 yards and has placed 182 inside the 20.

In 2021, he led the NFL with 88 punts for 4,108 yards (an average of 46.7) while playing for the Texans.
