News: Shoulder injury may sideline Saints quarterback Derek Carr for entire 2025 season
The tumultuous relationship between the New Orleans Saints and Derek Carr is taking another turn, as reports on Friday indicate that the quarterback may miss part or all of the 2025 NFL season.
According to NFL Network, Carr is currently dealing with a shoulder injury that could potentially jeopardize his availability for the upcoming season. He is currently considering different options, including the possibility of undergoing shoulder surgery.
During the offseason, the Saints chose not to release or trade Carr, instead opting to restructure his contract. This led many to believe that Carr would be the starting quarterback for the Saints this fall.
However, with the ninth overall pick in this month's NFL Draft, the Saints have been linked to several college quarterbacks, such as Shedeur Sanders from Colorado and Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss, as potential options for their pick.
Carr, who is 34 years old, has a record of 14-13 as the starting quarterback for the Saints over the past two seasons. However, he was limited to only 10 games in 2024 due to injuries, including a left hand injury and a concussion in Week 14 against the New York Giants.
According to The Athletic, the Saints were not caught off guard by the news of Carr's shoulder injury. This contradicts previous statements from general manager Mickey Loomis and new head coach Kellen Moore, who both expressed their appreciation for having Carr on the team in February.
Loomis stated at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, "I think we feel like we've got a guy we can win with."
Carr has an impressive career record of 41,245 passing yards and 257 touchdowns with only 112 interceptions for both the Raiders (2014-2022) and the Saints. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl four times, although not with the Saints, as his last Pro Bowl appearance was in 2022.
