Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh Plans to 'Challenge Boundaries' with Cadence
The head coach of the New York Jets, Robert Saleh, retracted his previous statement that quarterback Aaron Rodgers' unique way of calling plays was causing the team's pre-snap penalties.
During Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos, the Jets were penalized five times for false starts.
Saleh said after the game, "We need to figure out if we are capable of handling all of the different ways of calling plays. It wasn't an issue during training camp, but today it was a major setback."
Rodgers, a four-time MVP known for drawing opponents offsides with his play-calling, stated that he did not believe his cadence was the issue.
"I don't think we need to make big changes based on one game," Rodgers said.
He also mentioned that holding players accountable is another way to address the issue, not just changing his cadence.
The Jets had a total of 13 penalties for 90 yards against the Broncos, with seven of them being pre-snap (five on offense and two on defense).
In a video conference with reporters on Monday, Saleh seemed to backtrack as he differentiated between "cadence" and "operation."
"We will always push the limits with our cadence. Always," he stated. "But when it comes to our operation, getting in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage, and communication, those are all areas we can improve and clean up."
"But when it comes to our cadence, that is a part of our identity and we will continue to push the limits on that."
On Sunday, Rodgers completed 24 of 42 passes for 225 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions, and was sacked five times.
