Doug Pederson and Jaguars Disheartened by 0-4 Record

Doug Pederson was asked about his job security on Sunday night as the Jaguars suffered their fourth consecutive loss to start the 2024 season.

Jacksonville has been defeated by five, four, and three points, as well as a 37-point blowout by Buffalo (47-10). With five losses in their final six games of the 2023 season, the Jaguars have now lost nine of their last ten games. This Sunday, they will face the Indianapolis Colts (2-2) at home.

An 0-5 start to the season would mirror Urban Meyer's disastrous start to the 2021 season.

Pederson acknowledged the frustration felt by players and coaches, and expressed disappointment that the plays practiced during the week are not translating to success on game days.

Following a 24-20 loss to the Texans in Week 4, Pederson seemed to place blame on the players when asked about taking over play-calling from offensive coordinator Press Taylor.

"As coaches, we cannot go out and make the plays. It's a two-way street. So you can point the finger all you want, and it's fine. Point it at me, I can handle it. Ask me, say whatever, write, go ahead," he stated.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence stressed the importance of the team sticking together.

"No one is going to come and save us. It's on us," he said.

Lawrence has now lost nine consecutive starts. Both he and Pederson believe that the offense is close to a breakthrough.

"There are things that we did well (on Sunday); we just need to do more of it," Lawrence said. "I don't think we need to completely overhaul everything and start from scratch."

Since taking over the Jaguars, Pederson has a record of 18-20, with two 9-8 seasons. The only team to make the playoffs after an 0-4 start was the 1992 San Diego Chargers.

Meyer's first win in 2021 came in London, where the Jaguars will face the Chicago Bears on October 13th after a potentially crucial game this week. Before the Jaguars traveled to Houston, Pederson emphasized the importance of the back-to-back games against division rivals. The Colts defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24 on Sunday.

"These next two games are critical, and then we can focus on getting back on track and putting these first three games behind us," Pederson said before Sunday's loss. "But every game is important, and the guys understand that. They're prepared and ready to go, and we just need to go out there and play."

Jacksonville defeated the Colts twice last season, winning both games by double digits.
