"Colts Making Contingency Plans for Injured PK Matt Gay"
The status of Colts kicker Matt Gay for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans is uncertain due to a hernia, which caused him to miss Wednesday's practice.
According to head coach Shane Steichen, it is too early to determine if Gay will be able to play.
\"We will monitor his progress throughout the week,\" Steichen stated on Wednesday, neither confirming nor denying if Gay underwent surgery for his injury.
In the preseason finale against the Bengals, Spencer Shrader filled in for Gay after he attempted the first extra point of the game and did not return. Steichen revealed that Gay sustained the injury the week after the Cincinnati game.
During the 2023 season, Gay had a successful record of 35 out of 36 extra point attempts and 33 out of 41 field-goal attempts, with only three misses from within 50 yards.
Shrader, an undrafted rookie from Notre Dame, is currently on the practice squad and may be activated for Sunday's game.
In addition, wide receiver Josh Downs was also absent from Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury he sustained on August 7th.
As a rookie last season, Downs had an impressive performance with 68 receptions, 771 receiving yards, and two touchdowns primarily playing in the slot position.
