'Chiefs' Rashee Rice Undergoing Further Examinations; Potential Trade for Wide Receiver on the Horizon'
Andy Reid did not completely rule out Rashee Rice for the remainder of the season, but the Kansas City Chiefs may be looking to make a third midseason trade for a wide receiver in three years.
According to Reid, Rice is still undergoing tests after taking a hit to the knee from his own quarterback during Sunday's game. While he will not be available for next week's game against the New Orleans Saints, Reid did not give any further updates on Rice's condition. However, sources have reported that the Chiefs fear he may have torn his ACL.
\"We are still running tests, so I cannot give you a definite answer at this time,\" Reid said on Monday.
During the first quarter of their 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, Patrick Mahomes threw an interception that was returned by cornerback Kristian Fulton. As Mahomes attempted to make a tackle, Rice came up from behind and caused a fumble, resulting in a collision that injured Rice's knee. He had to be helped off the field and was eventually taken to the locker room on a cart.
Rice, who is 24 years old, is currently the Chiefs' top receiver in catches, targets, yards, and touchdowns (tied with Xavier Worthy).
Reid stated that it is not solely up to Worthy, the team's first-round pick, to step up in Rice's absence.
\"We have other players who have experience playing in games,\" Reid said. \"He is not the only one and does not have to be the only one. We have a strong group of players that we can utilize, and we typically spread the ball around, which is what we will continue to do.\"
The Chiefs are expected to give more playing time to veteran JuJu Smith-Schuster and former second-round pick Skyy Moore. However, this is not the first time the team has added a new receiver midseason.
In October 2022, the Chiefs made a trade with the New York Giants to acquire wide receiver Kadarius Toney before the trade deadline. Last year, they acquired former Chief Mecole Hardman from the New York Jets. Toney is no longer with the team, while Hardman has only played 14 snaps on offense this season and has not been targeted.
\"It depends on who the player is,\" Reid explained. \"If they have experience in our offense, it is not too difficult. However, it does take some time for them to get familiar with the terminology. It is much easier now than during training camp when they have to learn a large number of plays. Here, they only have the game week to learn and get on the same page with the quarterback and timing, which can be a bigger challenge.\"
The trade deadline is November 5th.
