Buccaneers Sign LT Tristan Wirfs to Record-Breaking Contract as NFL's Top-Paid Offensive Lineman | Picks n' Previews

The Buccaneers' general manager, Jason Licht, has demonstrated his commitment by making left tackle Tristan Wirfs the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL on Thursday.

Wirfs has agreed to a five-year contract, ending his contract dispute and reportedly earning up to $140 million.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield shared the news during Thursday's training camp, announcing, "My friend just got extended," while on the field.

The team's social media accounts also shared the news, calling Wirfs "the highest-paid offensive lineman in @NFL history."

Wirfs, 25, participated in some drills during camp but chose to observe padded practice while working on a new deal.

His contract is the fifth in franchise history to pay a player at least $20 million annually.

After three seasons at right tackle, the Bucs moved Wirfs to left tackle last season. They exercised his fifth-year option, which would have paid him $18.6 million this season, but both sides were determined to reach a long-term extension.

Licht told reporters on Sunday that Wirfs deserves to be the highest-paid lineman in the league. His deal averages $28 million per season, surpassing the offseason extension of Minnesota Vikings tackle Christian Darrisaw, who earns $26 million per year.

"I can assure you that Tristan will be playing for the Bucs this year and in the distant future. I believe we will reach an agreement at some point, I just can't say when. ... I am hopeful that it will be soon," Licht said.

The Bucs selected Wirfs with the 13th overall pick in the 2020 draft from Iowa. He has started all 63 games he has played, earning Pro Bowl honors for the past three seasons and being named All-Pro in 2021.
