Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix was chosen as one of six team captains on Wednesday, making him the first rookie since Hall of Famer Floyd Little in 1967 to receive this honor.

The team voted for the captains, and coach Sean Payton expressed his admiration for Nix's selection.

"This is a rare occurrence," Payton stated. "It's something that must be earned. All of the players voted for these captains, and the results were very clear. It's not common for a rookie to be named captain, but it's natural for the quarterback position to have a leadership role. This is something that happens organically during the spring and training camp."

Nix, who will be the first rookie quarterback to start a season opener for the Broncos since Hall of Famer John Elway in 1983, was officially announced as the starter just days before the team's final preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.

According to Payton, he has never had a rookie captain on any of the teams he has coached.

"This is a first for me," Payton admitted. "Not just a rookie, but in general. I think it speaks for itself. It's a credit to Nix, and his teammates clearly believed he deserved this role."

Wide receiver Courtland Sutton, guard Quinn Meinerz, cornerback Pat Surtain II, linebacker Alex Singleton, and kicker Wil Lutz were also selected as Broncos captains.

Nix, who is 24 years old, was drafted 12th overall by the Broncos in this year's NFL Draft from Oregon. In two preseason games, he completed 23 out of 30 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

The Broncos will begin their season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
