'SMU's Rhett Lashlee Secures Another Contract Extension as Coach'
SMU and head football coach Rhett Lashlee have reached an agreement on a contract extension.
The university announced the extension on Friday, but as a private institution, they are not obligated to disclose the terms. Lashlee had previously received a contract extension in November of last year.
Lashlee is currently in his third season at SMU, and the Mustangs have a record of 9-1 (6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference). They are currently ranked No. 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings and have two remaining regular season games against Virginia and Cal before potentially playing in the ACC championship game on December 7th.
This is SMU's first season in the ACC.
In 2023, Lashlee led the Mustangs to an 11-3 record as a member of the American Athletic Conference, and they won their first league title since 1984.
\"Rhett was the obvious choice when we conducted our head coaching search in 2021, and everything he and his staff have accomplished only solidifies our decision,\" said athletic director Rick Hart. \"He has consistently aligned with our values and represents SMU with both class and integrity. As we navigate through a time of significant change in college athletics and the college athletics model, Rhett has been an invaluable partner and leader.\"
At 41 years old, Lashlee has a record of 27-10 with the Mustangs. He has previously worked as an offensive coordinator at SMU, Miami, UConn, Auburn, Arkansas State, and Samford.
