'Season Opener to Feature South Carolina's Starting Quarterback, LaNorris Sellers'
LaNorris Sellers has been designated as the starting quarterback for South Carolina's first game of the 2024 season.
On Tuesday, Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer announced that Sellers had beaten out Robby Ashford, who transferred from Auburn, for the position. The team's season opener will take place on August 31st against Old Dominion in Columbia, South Carolina.
According to Beamer, "LaNorris has shown consistency and improvement each week. He has a calm demeanor and a strong understanding of our game plan. He has fulfilled our expectations since the end of spring practice."
Last season, Sellers served as the backup to Spencer Rattler, who was drafted by the New Orleans Saints. In that role, Sellers completed all four of his pass attempts for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed five times for 51 yards and scored a touchdown.
Beamer stated, "The quarterback who gives us the best chance to succeed will be our starter week after week. This does not mean we will be rotating quarterbacks constantly. That is not our plan. However, LaNorris must continue to improve as he has been, and Robby must also continue to make progress. This will only make our team stronger."
Last season, South Carolina won three of its last four games, finishing with a 5-7 overall record and a 3-5 record in the Southeastern Conference.
