Resignation of South Carolina's Athletic Director Ray Tanner
South Carolina is preparing to initiate a quest for a fresh athletic director following Ray Tanner's announcement on Friday that he will be stepping down.
At the age of 66, Tanner has been leading the Gamecocks' athletic department since 2012 and will continue to serve until a replacement is selected. The nationwide search for a new AD is scheduled to commence at the conclusion of the autumn semester.
He served as South Carolina's baseball coach from 1997 to 2012, securing College World Series championships in 2010 and 2011.
\"I have been contemplating for some time now that there will come a time for Carolina to bring in a new athletics director, and the president and I have had discussions about it,\" Tanner stated in a statement released by the university. \"There was interest for me to remain at the institution. I agreed to stay in a different role because of my deep affection for this university, this city, and this state.
\"I cherished my time as a baseball coach and as an administrator. I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked here for such an extended period of time.\"
Tanner will transition into a new position as senior adviser to university president Michael Amiridis. According to the university, Tanner's contract as AD was set to expire in June 2026, and his new role as adviser will last until June 2028.
Some notable hires during Tanner's tenure include football coaches Shane Beamer and Will Muschamp, as well as men's basketball coach Lamont Paris.
South Carolina celebrated national championships in women's basketball under head coach Dawn Staley in 2017, 2022, and 2024. In 2023-24, the Gamecocks had a perfect record of 38-0.
Tanner also served as the baseball coach at his alma mater, North Carolina State, from 1988 to 1996, finishing with a career record of 1,133-489-3.
