Georgia LB's reckless driving charges dismissed
The charges of reckless driving and racing were dropped against Georgia's linebacker Smael Mondon on Monday.
According to attorney Billy Healan, his client pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving too fast for the conditions during a hearing at Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court on Monday.
Healan confirmed that Mondon, who was arrested on July 10, completed defensive driving and victim impact classes and paid a $500 fine.
"We believe that this was the appropriate outcome," Healan told ESPN. "Smael may have accelerated too quickly, but he was not racing and his actions were not reckless. He has paid his fine and is ready to move forward. Smael is set to graduate in December and has a clean driving record."
Mondon, a senior from Dallas, Georgia, is expected to start for the third consecutive season. He was named to the coaches' 2023 All-SEC second team and recorded 68 tackles in 13 games. In 2022, he led the Bulldogs with 76 tackles.
Georgia, currently ranked first in the Associated Press preseason poll, will kick off their season on August 31 against No. 14 Clemson in Atlanta.
