Florida to Begin Quarterback DJ Lagway in Place of Injured Graham Mertz (Concussion)
The starting quarterback for Florida, Graham Mertz, is anticipated to be absent from the upcoming game against Samford due to a concussion. Freshman DJ Lagway has been chosen to take his place.
During the Gators' defeat against Miami on Saturday, Mertz sustained an injury in the third quarter. He has not participated in practice this week.
Lagway stepped in for Mertz during the Miami game and completed 3 of 6 passes for 31 yards, but also threw one interception.
Coach Billy Napier of Florida had high praise for Lagway, who was named the National Gatorade Player of the Year last season while playing for Willis High, located approximately 50 miles north of Houston. Lagway enrolled at Florida in January and took part in spring drills.
\"I believe he did a lot of positive things, especially during the second drive where we were able to execute some plays and have success,\" Napier commented on Lagway's performance against Miami. \"... One of the highlights was his success in helping us score a touchdown while he was in the game. Despite being a young player, he will continue to work hard and improve. His future is bright.\"
Prior to his injury, Mertz completed 11-of-20 passes for 91 yards and threw one interception.
In addition, safety Asa Turner (knee) and Devin Moore (shoulder) are among the other Florida players who will be absent from the game.
