"Duke designates Maalik Murphy as starting quarterback after Texas transfer"

Maalik Murphy has been named as the starting quarterback for Duke's season opener against Elon on Aug. 30.

Murphy, who is a redshirt sophomore, transferred from Texas and appeared in seven games, starting two, during the 2023 season. He had a completion rate of 40 out of 71 passes for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions as a redshirt freshman.

After competing with returning starter Grayson Loftis, Murphy secured the starting role at Duke.

In 2023, Loftis played in eight games and had a record of 91-for-163 passing for 1,006 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions while filling in for the injured Riley Leonard.

Duke was chosen as the 11th team out of 17 in the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason media poll.
