"Brian Kelly Praises LSU Players' Resilience Following Defeat Against USC"
Brian Kelly stated that the 18th ranked LSU team must improve their coaching and performance as they prepare for their first home game following a loss to Southern California on Sunday night.
\"It was a closely contested game that came down to the final 18 seconds,\" Kelly acknowledged. \"We will look to bounce back this weekend at home.\"
This will be the first home start for long-awaited quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who is not trying to emulate the previous Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks at LSU, Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow. Nussmeier threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the 27-20 loss to the Trojans.
However, Kelly revealed that the team is analyzing ways to force defenses to defend the entire field and finish strong.
\"He may not be Jayden Daniels, but if you don't defend him, he can still be a threat,\" Kelly warned.
The Tigers' inability to convert on a fourth-quarter three-and-out and settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown on the following drive proved to be crucial in the loss.
\"When you have opportunities late in the game, you have to capitalize on them,\" Kelly emphasized.
LSU will face Nicholls State, a FCS program, on a short week after arriving in Baton Rouge at 5 a.m. on Monday. Despite the challenging circumstances, Kelly was pleased with the team's mentality as they practiced on their off day in 96-degree weather.
\"They responded in the right way,\" Kelly praised.
After reviewing the game film, Kelly identified the safety position as an area that needs to step up, especially with Jardin Gilbert suspended for the first half due to targeting.
