Analysis: Utah Quarterback Cameron Rising (hand) Not Expected to Participate in Matchup Against Utah State
The Action Network reported on Thursday that Utah's star quarterback, Cameron Rising, is unlikely to play in Saturday's game against Utah State due to a finger injury on his throwing hand.
Rising sustained the injury during the Utes' 23-12 win over Baylor last weekend. He was pushed into coolers on the sideline in the second quarter and returned wearing street clothes with two fingers taped together.
Utah coach Kyle Whittington has not officially ruled out Rising, stating that his injury is not serious.
According to the report, Rising is expected to return for Utah's game against Oklahoma State on September 21st.
If Rising is unable to play, freshman Isaac Wilson, younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson, will start for the No. 12 Utes (2-0).
Wilson completed 4 of 9 passes for 30 yards in the second half against Baylor, as the Utes were unable to score.
Wilson said earlier this week, "I have to prepare the same every week, whether I'm the first, second, or third string. Just gotta prepare. I could have prepared a little better last game. I felt like I did good, but there's always more to improve on."
In less than four quarters of play this season, Rising has completed 18 of 29 passes for 346 yards and seven touchdowns.
The 25-year-old Rising missed all of last season after tearing multiple ligaments and meniscus cartilage in his left knee during a loss to Penn State in the Rose Bowl on January 2nd, 2023.
He made his first appearance in nearly 20 months on August 29th against Southern Utah, where he threw a career-best five touchdown passes in one half before leaving the game. Rising wore a bulky brace on his left knee for protection.
Whittingham stated that Brandon Rose will serve as backup for Wilson if he starts against the Aggies. Rose, a third-year sophomore, made his first college appearance in the Southern Utah game, but did not attempt a pass and only gained 8 yards on one carry.
