Alabama Prevents USC from Hiring GM Courtney Morgan by Increasing Salary to $825K

Alabama secured the services of general manager Courtney Morgan for the next three years with a contract worth a minimum of $825,000, as reported by various sources.

According to CBS Sports and ESPN, Morgan, who has been highly regarded for his recruitment and player personnel skills, was being pursued by USC to become their president of football operations under new head coach Lincoln Riley.

Earlier this month, the University of Florida hired a search firm to find a general manager for their football program. Meanwhile, Texas Tech's James Blanchard was given a two-year contract worth $400,000 starting on August 1st.

Former Washington and UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel predicted on SiriusXM that this trend of lucrative deals for college football general managers will only continue to grow.

\"This position is going to become even more valuable. Mark my words,\" Neuheisel stated. \"Remember this date when we thought $825k was a massive deal for a college football general manager.\"

The constant turnover of players and complications with NIL deals pose ongoing challenges for college football head coaches.

In January, Alabama head coach Nick Saban retired, citing the increasing complexities of college sports as the reason for his decision.

\"I thought we could have a great team next year, but when you talk to 70 or 80 percent of the players, all they want to know is: Will I get playing time and how much will I get paid?\" Saban told ESPN after his retirement. \"Our program has always been focused on creating value for our players' future, their academic success, and their development as NFL players on the field.

\"But now I'm thinking, 'Maybe this doesn't work anymore. Maybe the goals and aspirations are different and it's all about how much money can I make as a college player?' I'm not saying that's a bad thing or wrong, but it's never been our focus and it's not why we've been successful over the years.\"
