Iowa's Top Scorer Owen Freeman (finger) Ruled Out for Rest of Season
Iowa forward Owen Freeman will undergo a surgical procedure to address a finger injury on his right hand, effectively ending his season, according to an announcement from the university on Monday.
As a sophomore, Freeman had been averaging a team-leading 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 19 appearances, all of which he started. He boasted an impressive 63.8 percent field goal percentage and also led the Hawkeyes in blocks with 35.
\"After discussions with Owen, his family, and our medical staff, surgery is the most suitable course of action for proper healing and rehabilitation,\" stated Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. \"We anticipate a full recovery for Owen and he has the unwavering support of his teammates and coaches throughout this entire process.\"
In his two seasons at Iowa, Freeman has played in 53 games, starting in 44 of them. He has averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.
According to McCaffery, Freeman sustained the injury recently.
\"Obviously, it is a serious enough injury to require surgery. It is unfortunate timing for both him and our team,\" McCaffery explained. \"However, the risk of permanent damage was present, and that is not something we are willing to risk. His health and well-being are our top priority.\"
The Hawkeyes (13-8, 4-6 Big Ten) have lost four of their last five games and will face No. 7 Purdue at home on Tuesday.
