"Former Utah Player, Alex Jensen, Returns as Coach to Lead Program's Revival"
The University of Utah has selected former Utes player Alex Jensen as their new men's basketball coach on Thursday.
Jensen, who is now 48 years old, was a part of the Utes team during their successful run in the 1990s under the guidance of renowned coach Rick Majerus. During this time, the Utes made it to the NCAA Tournament eight out of ten seasons, including a memorable appearance in the 1998 championship game where they were defeated by Kentucky with a score of 78-69.
Mark Harlan, the athletic director of Utah, expressed his confidence in Jensen's abilities in a statement, saying, "Alex has a wealth of experience coaching at the college, NBA, and international levels, and is highly regarded for his talent in developing players and teaching the game of basketball. He has a clear vision and plan to bring the Runnin' Utes basketball program back to national prominence, and I am certain that he will elevate our program and reignite the passion of our fans along the way."
Jensen also shared his excitement about this new opportunity, saying, "My journey in basketball has been shaped by so many people who have helped me grow as a coach and as a person, leading me to this chance to lead the Runnin' Utes basketball program. I am grateful for all the amazing mentors I have had along the way and I am looking forward to this next chapter in my career. Returning to a place that holds such significance for me and my family is truly special."
Since Majerus' departure in 2003-04 due to health concerns, the Utes have only made it to the tournament four times, with their most recent appearance being in 2016.
After playing in the Continental Basketball Association and overseas from 2000-2007, Jensen began his coaching career as an assistant under Majerus at St. Louis from 2007-2011. He then went on to become the head coach of the Canton Charge of the G League from 2011-2013.
A native of Bountiful, Utah, Jensen returned to his home state in 2013 as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz, where he remained until 2023 when he joined the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach.
Jensen will be taking over for Craig Smith, who was fired on February 24th after achieving a 65-62 overall record.
The Utes currently have a record of 16-14 (8-11 Big 12) and will wrap up their regular season on Saturday against No. 23 BYU.
