East Carolina's head coach, Michael Schwartz, has agreed to a one-year extension of his contract, which will now run through the 2027-28 season.

The university's board of trustees approved the deal on Friday and the school announced it on Saturday morning.

Under Schwartz's leadership, the Pirates achieved a 19-14 record (10-8 in the American Athletic Conference) last season. This was the most regular-season wins the program has seen in its 61-year history in Division I. Additionally, ECU had its second winning record in conference play since 1997-98.

In a statement, East Carolina's athletic director, Jon Gilbert, expressed his confidence in the direction of the basketball program under Schwartz's guidance. He also mentioned their joint commitment to further elevating the program and acquiring top talent. Gilbert praised Schwartz for his clear vision and detailed plan to build a program that the entire community can be proud of, especially in the current landscape of collegiate athletics.

Schwartz, who is 48 years old, has a record of 50-49 in his three seasons as the Pirates' head coach. He was hired as the 24th head coach in the program's history on March 16, 2022.

Schwartz expressed his gratitude towards Chancellor Philip G. Rogers and Jon Gilbert for their unwavering support of the basketball program. He also shared his love for being a part of the Pirate community and his commitment to working hard and dedicating himself to achieving success. Schwartz and his staff are continuously adding new players to the roster for the upcoming season, and they prioritize bringing in individuals with high character who will contribute positively to the team's culture.
