'Bryant University's New Coach: Jamion Christian Takes Over for Phil Martelli Jr.'
Bryant enlisted Jamion Christian as the newly appointed head coach for their men's basketball team on Thursday.
Christian, aged 42, previously held the same position at his alma mater Mount St. Mary's (2012-18), Siena (2018-19), and George Washington (2019-22). He spent the last couple of seasons coaching a professional team in Italy.
Christian will take over for Phil Martelli Jr., who departed from the Bulldogs to become the head coach at VCU on March 26.
Bryant concluded their season with a record of 23-12 and secured a No. 15 seed in the NCAA Tournament, ultimately losing to No. 2 Michigan State in the first round.
"As the head coach, I am eagerly anticipating building upon the momentum of our program," Christian stated. "We will compete with fervor, play with joy, and demonstrate the strength of connection. Our actions will elevate those around us."
Bryant, situated in Smithfield, R.I., competes in the America East Conference.
"Today marks a momentous day for the Bryant University men's basketball program," exclaimed athletic director Bill Smith. "Coach Christian is an exceptional coach and a relentless recruiter who is dedicated to developing and guiding student-athletes to achieve success both on and off the court."
Christian has amassed a 147-161 record, leading Mount St. Mary's to the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2017. He was honored as the Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2016-17.
