"Pelicans Fail to Make Playoffs, Terminate VP David Griffin's Contract"

The New Orleans Pelicans terminated executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin on Monday following a season of 61 losses.

Owner Gayle Benson made the declaration but did not mention the future of head coach Willie Green, who was selected by Griffin in 2021. Green holds a record of 148-180.

Griffin had been leading the Pelicans since April 17, 2019. During his tenure, the team recorded a record of 209-263 with only two playoff appearances.

\"This was a challenging decision, but one that I believe is necessary at this time to bring a new approach to our front office and establish a culture that will bring sustainable success, both on and off the court,\" Benson stated. \"I am committed to finding the right person to lead our basketball operations department and bring an NBA Championship to our city. That is what our fans deserve. I am truly grateful for David's leadership and numerous contributions to the Pelicans organization and the New Orleans community over the past six years.\"

Griffin, who is 51 years old, was the mastermind behind the Cleveland Cavaliers' 2015-16 NBA championship team and arrived in New Orleans with high expectations.

His initial draft pick was Zion Williamson, selected as the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. Griffin traded Anthony Davis -- who requested a trade -- to the Los Angeles Lakers for Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Lonzo Ball, and three first-round picks.

Williamson has been frequently injured throughout his career, appearing in 214 games and missing 268 due to various injuries. His lack of availability has hindered the Pelicans from gaining much momentum, as he has been in and out of the lineup.

Under Griffin's leadership, the Pelicans made the playoffs in the 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons. Williamson missed the entire first season due to a right foot injury and played in 70 games in the other.
