"Nikola Jokic guaranteed to become 3rd NBA athlete to maintain triple-double average"
Nikola Jokic is set to become the third player in NBA history, and the first center, to achieve a triple-double average for an entire season.
In Friday night's 117-109 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies, Jokic secured his fourth assist, solidifying his accomplishment. The three-time MVP recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 13 assists against Memphis, marking his 34th triple-double of the season - the fourth-highest in league history.
As the regular season comes to a close on Sunday, Jokic is averaging career highs in points (29.8) and assists (10.3), along with 12.8 rebounds per game. With a total of 164 regular-season triple-doubles, Jokic ranks second only to his teammate Russell Westbrook, who holds the record with 203.
After the win against Memphis, Jokic humbly stated, "It's nice. I haven't done that before. I don't know. I don't know what to say. It's good."
Westbrook was the most recent player to achieve a triple-double average for a season, accomplishing the feat four times, most recently in 2020-21 with the Washington Wizards. He also achieved a triple-double average for three consecutive seasons while playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder (2016-19).
In 1961-62, Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson became the first player to achieve a triple-double average for a season while playing for the Cincinnati Royals.
Nuggets interim coach David Adelman praised Jokic, stating, "If he doesn't win the MVP, it's the greatest season of all time not to win the MVP."
