"Lakers Reveal Sculpture Honoring Kobe and Gianna Bryant"

'Kobe and Gianna Bryant Honored with Statue Unveiling by Lakers'

On the significant date of 8/2/24, the Los Angeles Lakers revealed the second of three sculptures commissioned to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant near Crypto.com Arena.

The new sculpture portrays Bryant alongside his daughter Gianna. The two were among seven individuals who perished in a helicopter crash in Southern California on Jan. 26, 2020. Kobe Bryant was 41 years old at the time of his passing, while Gianna was 13.

In the statue, the two are seated, with the father's arm around his daughter as angelic wings spread behind them. Kobe Bryant, recognized as "Most Valuable Girl Dad," declares in a quote at the base, "Gianna is a force to be reckoned with. She surpasses my abilities at her age. She's got it. Girls are remarkable. If I could, I would have five more daughters. I'm a proud girl dad."

The chosen date holds significance as 8 and 24 were the numbers Bryant wore during his illustrious career with the Lakers, while 2 was the number Gianna wore.

The same numbers were also significant when the Lakers revealed the first Bryant statue outside their home arena. The team has yet to announce the completion date for the third statue.

Additionally, on Friday, the locker used by Bryant during his final 13 NBA seasons was sold at an auction for $2.88 million. According to Sotheby's, the amount set a record for a sports locker.

The locker was estimated to be worth $1 million to $1.5 million, as reported by Sportico.
