"Joel Embiid Undergoes Knee Surgery, Follow-Up Assessment in 6 Weeks"
Former NBA MVP Joel Embiid underwent a surgical procedure on his left knee on Wednesday and will be evaluated again in approximately six weeks, according to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.
The team's announcement stated that the surgery was considered successful and was performed by Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow at NYU Langone Sports Medicine Center.
In late February, Embiid was ruled out for the remainder of the season as he and the Sixers considered their options for his troublesome knee. Last week, it was announced that he would undergo surgery for the second time in just over a year.
The 2022-23 NBA MVP and seven-time All-Star appeared in a career-low 19 games in the 2024-25 season, primarily due to knee discomfort and a three-game suspension for pushing a reporter in the locker room. His other injury absences this season included a fractured sinus.
During his time on the court, Embiid averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.
This is just another disappointing chapter in a season filled with injuries for the 76ers, who had high hopes for a championship after signing All-Star Paul George and extending young star Tyrese Maxey. However, the trio of Embiid, George, and Maxey only played together in 15 games, and the Philadelphia team (24-56) currently sits in 13th place in the 15-team Eastern Conference.
