'Indefinite Absence of Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich Due to Illness'
According to ESPN, San Antonio's Gregg Popovich, who holds the record for most wins as an NBA coach, will be out of commission indefinitely due to a health concern.
The Spurs announced that the 75-year-old Popovich was absent from their 113-103 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday due to illness.
In Popovich's absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson will take over as the interim coach. The team also stated that Popovich will not be traveling with them for their upcoming games against the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets.
Since the 1996-97 season, Popovich has been at the helm of the Spurs, leading them to five NBA championships and amassing a record of 1,390-824.
On March 11, 2022, Popovich surpassed Don Nelson for the most regular season wins by a coach, achieving his 1,336th victory.
Popovich has been named NBA Coach of the Year three times. He also coached the U.S. men's national team to a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
