Former NBA athlete Royce White emerges victorious in Republican Senate primary election

Ex-NBA athlete Royce White emerged victorious in the Republican U.S. Senate primary in Minnesota on Tuesday.

He overcame Joe Fraser and will now go head-to-head with incumbent Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar in the upcoming November election.

The 33-year-old White previously suffered defeat in the 2022 GOP primary for a position in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Selected in the first round (16th overall) by Houston in 2012, the 6-foot-8 power forward never saw action for the Rockets after revealing mental health concerns and stating that he would not travel for away games.

White only appeared in three NBA games with the Sacramento Kings in March 2014, tallying zero points, assists, or rebounds in a total of nine minutes.

He also competed in the NBA G League and NBL Canada, where he was named league MVP in 2017 and won two championships (2017, 2018) with the London Lightning.

White will face an uphill battle against Klobuchar, who has served in the Senate since 2007. As a Black candidate, White has argued that he can expand the Republican party's reach by appealing to voters of color in Minnesota.

He sparked controversy last year by stating on former Donald Trump advisor Steve Bannon's "War Room" show that "women have become too outspoken."
