"Chauncey Billups, Blazers Coach, Commits to Multi-Year Contract Extension"
Chauncey Billups, the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, has agreed to a multi-year extension, according to the team's announcement on Sunday morning.
The financial details of the contract were not revealed, as Billups is in the final guaranteed year of his current deal.
This decision comes just six days after the Trail Blazers also extended the contract of their general manager, Joe Cronin.
In a statement, Billups expressed his gratitude to Trail Blazers chair Jody Allen, vice chair Bert Kolde, and Joe Cronin for their belief in him and their shared goal of building a successful team for the future. He also emphasized the team's focus on a defensive-oriented, competitive culture and promised to continue delivering a product that fans can be proud of and support every night.
Under Billups' leadership, the Trail Blazers currently have a record of 35-46 and will play their final game of the season against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday. This is a significant improvement from their 21-win season last year.
A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Billups has a coaching record of 116-211 during his four seasons with the Trail Blazers. He took over as head coach after Terry Stotts, who led the team to the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons, stepped down.
Allen praised Billups' ability to foster a collaborative and growth-oriented culture within the team and expressed her excitement for his continued work in developing players and leading the Trail Blazers to long-term success.
Billups, who is 48 years old, was named the NBA Finals MVP in 2004 while playing for the Detroit Pistons and helped the team win the league title. He was also a five-time All-Star during his playing career with the Pistons, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Toronto Raptors, and New York Knicks from 1997 to 2014.
