Yankees Right-Handed Pitcher Gerrit Cole Expected to Start This Weekend
The starting rotation for the New York Yankees may soon welcome back right-hander Gerrit Cole.
Cole is expected to throw a bullpen session on Friday and will likely be officially slotted into the rotation after being scratched on Tuesday due to fatigue. He is set to make his eighth start of the 2024 season on Sunday against the Blue Jays, as he reported no issues during a light workout on Wednesday.
The 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner, Cole had a delayed start to this season due to right elbow inflammation. In seven starts, he has a record of 3-2 with a 5.40 ERA, 12 walks, and 38 strikeouts in 35 innings.
After a rough outing last week against the New York Mets, where he allowed eight hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings, Cole is determined to bounce back. He acknowledged his frustration with the loss but knows that it's important to move on and focus on the next game.
\"I\'m frustrated -- frustrated sitting in the emotions of this loss,\" Cole said following that outing. \"But our job is to flush it and not let the play of the last six weeks affect the way we prepare for the next game.\"
In his career, Cole has a record of 148-77 with a 3.21 ERA in 307 games (all starts) with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2013-17), Houston Astros (2018-19), and Yankees.
