'Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Commits to Staying a 'Blue Jay' for Life with $500M Contract Signing'
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is enjoying a good life.
He secured his $500 million deal without having to leave the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Monday, Guerrero officially signed a 14-year contract that will keep him with Toronto until 2039. The agreement was made last week.
\"I always thought about this,\" Guerrero said. \"Thankfully, we made it happen and I will be a Blue Jay forever.\"
Guerrero originally joined the Blue Jays at 16 years old in 2015 and was predicted to become a star.
The 26-year-old Guerrero is a four-time All-Star and was the runner-up for the American League MVP award in 2021. He had a career-high .311 batting average, 48 home runs, and 111 RBIs. He would have won the award if it wasn't for Shohei Ohtani's impressive performance as both a hitter and pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels.
Guerrero could have become a free agent after this season, but he always hoped to reach a deal with the Blue Jays.
\"I've been with this organization since 2015. That's 10 years,\" Guerrero said. \"This organization is like family to me.\"
Guerrero, who was born in Montreal, is adored in Toronto and throughout Canada. The idea of him being a lifelong Blue Jay was a top priority for team president Mark Shapiro.
\"Vlad, you are now part of a group of players like Tony Gwynn, Cal Ripken Jr., and Derek Jeter, who not only had incredible careers, but also had the opportunity to do it all with one team, in one place,\" Shapiro said. \"This is a special opportunity for you, our fans, and our organization.\"
Toronto chairman Edward Rogers stated that securing Guerrero is part of the plan to consistently win.
\"We are committed to winning. Toronto deserves a top-notch team,\" Rogers said. \"We want to win the World Series. I believe we will win the World Series, and by signing this deal today, we have increased our chances.\"
The signing was well-received by fans and the player himself, who signed his name with pride.
\"When a country shows you love, you must give love in return,\" Guerrero said about Canada. \"That's what I'm doing right now.\"
Guerrero has yet to hit a home run in 63 at-bats this season and has a .302 batting average with seven RBIs in 16 games. Overall, he has a .288 average, 160 home runs, 181 doubles, and 514 RBIs in seven seasons with Toronto.
Great hitting runs in the family, as Guerrero's father, also named Vladimir, was the 2004 American League MVP for the Anaheim Angels and is a member of the Hall of Fame. Vladimir Sr. began his career with the Montreal Expos and played eight seasons (1996-2003) with the team.
